Daniel Hernández-Salazar (Guatemala, 1956)

My interest on photography began during my childhood. Later it became a passion when I studied Architecture. During the 1980’s Guatemalan civil war, I worked as photojournalist for international agencies such as Agence France Presse–AFP, REUTERS and the Associated Press–AP. I presently work as an Independent Photographer, focusing my interests on historical memory, documentary photography, portrait, nudes, architecture and landscape. Historical memory becoming my main topic of work and activism.

I remain loyal to the practice of analogue photography and darkroom, which I have never abandoned. I am one of a few still practicing and teaching this technique in Guatemala. Although I master digital equipment and techniques.

My work has been presented in more than 30 solo exhibitions and more than 40 group shows in North, Central and South America, Europe, Japan and Korea. For my artistic work in service of Human Rights I received in 1998 the Jonathan Mann Humanitas Award from the International Association of Physicians in Aids Care, and I was named Knight and Officer of the Ordre Des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 2005 and 2017. Part of my oeuvre has been published in two personal anthologies by Kage Shobo, (Tokio, 2006) and University of Texas Press (Austin, 2007), and has been featured in a number of art, academic and news publications, including the New York Times LENS Blog, Harpers, 6Mois, among others.

My work is part of several private and public collections such as the Muscarelle Museum of Art at William and Mary College in Virginia, USA., The University of Antwerp in Belgium, Rafael Landívar University and the Catholic Church Office on Human Rights-ODHAG in Guatemala. Since November 2012, my work is included in the permanent collection of the Kazerne Dossin Holocaust and Human Rights Museum in Mechelen, Belgium. On September 2014 I was appointed curator and designer of my own photo exhibition Genocide Dismissed, Guatemala a Silenced Tragedy presented at that Museum until March 2015.

I recently worked on the photographic project “se re (v) bela” which was exhibited in February 2016 in Guatemala, in 2017 in Quetzaltenango, and in 2018 in San Salvador. Nowadays and inspired by the Coronavirus pandemic, I developed the series titled Deserted City, I am working on a new landscape series and I continue my work on the body and memory.

In parallel I have developed and coordinated activities in the field of music. Among these stands out, the coordination of the One Hundred Bells for Peace concert in December 1997, commemorating the first anniversary of the signing of the Peace Accords. The direction of International Organ Festivals in the Metropolitan Cathedral and various concerts by chamber ensembles.

This year I was invited to the project If I Had a Hammer, participating in Fotofest, Texas, and coordinated by the artist Fred Schmidt-Arenales. On this occasion I created two works inspired by the work of a US journalist who was in Guatemala during the counter-revolution in the 1950s.

I am currently working on a photo documentation project about the life of Bernardo Arévalo De León, and his future administration.

Daniel Hernández-Salazar (Guatemala, 1956)

Mí interés por la fotografía inicio en la niñéz, para convirtirse en pasión cuando estudié arquitectura. Durante la guerra civil de Guatemala en los años 80’s, trabajé como reportero gráfico las agencias internacionales Agence France Presse, Reuters y Associated Press. Actualmente soy fotógrafo independiente, centrando mí interés en el retrato, el desnudo y la memoria histórica.

Nunca he abandonado la práctica de la fotografía analógica tradicional y de revelado en cuarto oscuro y soy uno de los únicos en Guatemala que aún practican y enseñan esta técnica. Al mismo tiempo domino las técnicas y equipos digitales.

Mí trabajo ha sido presentado en más de 30 exposiciones individuales y más de 40 colectivas en Norte, Centro y Sur América, Europa, Japón y Corea. Por mí labor artística en servicio de los Derechos Humanos, recibí en 1998 el Premio Humanitas Jonathan Mann de la Asociación Internacional de Médicos en el cuidado del SIDA, y fuí nombrado Caballero y Oficial de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras por el Gobierno francés en 2005 y 2017.

Mí obra ha sido publicada en dos antologías personales por la editorial Kage Shobo, (Tokio, 2006) y de la Universidad de Texas (Austin, 2007). Además mí trabajo ha sido presentado en publicaciones académicas, de arte y noticiosas incluyendo el Blog del New York Times LENS, y las Revistas Harper’s y 6 mois, entre otras. Desde 2012 Noviembre, mí obra está incluida en la colección permanente del Museo del Holocausto y Derechos Humanos Kazerne Dossin en Mechelen, Bélgica. Én septiembre de 2014, fuí nombrado curador y diseñador de mi exposición titulada Genocidio descartado, Guatemala una tragedia silenciada, presentada en ese museo, hasta hasta marzo 2015.

Recientemente trabajé en el proyecto fotográfico se re(v)bela, el cual  fue expuesto en febrero de 2016 en Guatemala, en 2017 en Quetzaltenango, y en 2018 en San Salvador. En la actualidad e inspirado por la pandemia del Coronavirus, desarrollé la serie titulada Ciudad desierta, trabajo una nueva serie de paisaje y  prosigo mi trabajo acerca del cuerpo y la memoria.

De manera paralela e desarrollado y coordinado en el campo de la música otras actividades, dentro de estas destacan la realización y coordinación en diciembre de 1997 del concierto Cien campanas para la Paz conmemorando el primer aniversario de la firma de los Acuerdos de Paz. La dirección de Festivales Internacionales de órgano en la Catedral Metropolitana y diversos conciertos de grupos de cámara.

Este año fui invitado al proyecto Si tuviera un martillo (If I Had a Hammer) participante en la Fotofest en Texas, y coordinado por el artista Fred Schmidt-Arenales. En esta ocasión creé dos obras inspiradas en el trabajo de un periodista estadounidense que estuvo en Guatemala durante la contra revolución  en los años 50’s.

Actualmente estoy trabajando un proyecto de foto documentación acerca de la vida de Bernardo Arévalo De León, y su futura administración.

Representado en Bélgica por la Galería Verbeeck-Van Dyck.

Daniel Hernández Salazar (Guatemala, 1956)

Passionné pour la photographie depuis son enfance, il a travaillé comme photo-journaliste pour la Agence France Presse, Reuters et l’Associated Press pendant la guerre civile au Guatemala. Actuellement il est photographe et artiste indépendant, intéressé par thèmes du corps et de la mémoire historique. Il maîtrise la photographie numérique et argentique.

Il a présenté son œuvre dans plus de 35 expositions individuelles et 40 expositions collectives en Amérique, Europe, Japon et Corée. Il a reçu le prix Humanitas Jonathan Mann (1998) et a été nommé Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres par le Ministère de la Culture de France (2005), qui l’a promu au grade d’Officier (2017).

Kage Shobo (Tokyo, 2006) et de l’Université du Texas (Austin, 2007) lui ont publié deux anthologies. Son travail est exposé en permanence au Musée de l’Holocauste et Droits Humains de Belgique, où il était conceptualisé son exposition Genocide dismissed, Guatemala a silent tragedy (2014).

En 2015 il a créé le projet Se re(v)bela, dont il a présenté les séries Guatemala se re(v)bela (2016) et Xela se re(v) bela (2017). En 2018 c’est le tour de San Salvador.

丹尼尔·埃尔南德斯·萨拉萨尔（危地马拉，1956年）

他从小就热爱摄影，在危地马拉内战期间曾担任法新社，路透社和美联社的摄影记者。目前，他是一名自由摄影师，对人体主题和历史记忆感兴趣。他精通数码和电影摄影。

他在美国，欧洲，日本和韩国的35多个个人展览和40个集体展览中展示了他的作品。他获得了人文科学乔纳森·曼（Honathan Mann）奖（1998），并被法国文化部（2005）任命为艺术与文学骑士奖（Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres），从而晋升为军官（2017）。

Kage Shobo（东京，2006年）和德克萨斯大学（Austin，2007年）为他出版了两本选集。他的作品在比利时大屠杀和人权博物馆永久展出，在那里他将他的展览《种族灭绝》，《危地马拉无声的悲剧》（2014年）概念化。

2015年，他创建了Se re（v）bela项目，其中介绍了危地马拉se re（v）bela（2016）和Xela se re（v）bela（2017）系列。在2018年，轮到圣萨尔瓦多了。
